Distance Learning // Online Learning

Description

Distance learning // online learning will be used as part of the teaching-learning-evaluating activities of the GSI Division.

Rationale

A situation in the Philippine General Hospital is that trainees are preoccupied with service of patients because of the huge number of patients. This hinders the holding of more frequent face-to-face teaching-learning sessions with the trainees by the consultant staff. At the moment, there are only two fixed GSI conferences per week, on Wednesday and Saturday. Even with just these two conferences, complete attendance of the trainees is rarely seen because the absent trainees are catering to the needs of patients.

The other situation is that consultants are part-time. They have other preoccupations such as private practice and administrative work within and outside the university system. This situation has also hinders the holding of more frequent face-to-face teaching-learning sessions with the trainees by the consultant staff. Even with just two GSI conferences per week, complete attendance of the consultants is rarely seen.

Distance learning / online learning can promote not only additional teaching-learning for the trainees but also additional interactions, and quality at that, between consultants and trainees during their free time. Both parties can just turn on their computers during their free time and do some teaching and learning.

Distance learning can be done through print and nonprint media. As early as 1990, the GSI Division has been using the print medium in their self-instructional programs. Starting July, 1999, the nonprint medium is being used through the email as well as through the GSI webpages. Both print and nonprint media will be used; however, with the convenience and cost-effectiveness of electronic medium, this will be used more often than the print medium.
