Head and Neck Surgical Oncology Program

Background

The Head and Neck Surgical Oncology Program was started in 1990. It is being handled by the Division of Head and Neck, Breast, Esophagus, and Soft Tissue Surgery of the Department of Surgery of the U.P. College of Medicine and Philippine General Hospital.

The training program is for one year. The scope of training is all tumors of the head and neck except those located in the brain, eyes, and ears.

The entry requirement is a graduate of a general surgery residency training program. There is only one trainee a year.

The graduate will be a general surgeon with subspecialty in head and neck surgical oncology. He/she is expected to propagate the subspecialty among the general surgeons throughout the Philippines.


General Objective

To acquire the requisite knowledge, skills, and attitude relevant to head and neck surgical oncology.

 Specific Objectives

At the end of the program, the trainee should be able to:

  1. Make a logical clinical diagnosis of all patients with head and neck tumors.
  2. Perform properly the indicated diagnostic procedures in patients with head and neck tumors.
  3. Make a logical and accurate intraoperative evaluation in patients with head and neck tumors.
  4. Interpret laboratory results logically and accurately for purposes of diagnosis and treatment in patients with head and neck tumors.
  5. Select the proper treatment modality for patients with head and neck tumors.
  6. Perform skillfully and safely surgical procedures for head and neck tumors.
  7. Institute preop and postop care in patients with head and neck tumors.
  8. Administer chemotherapy to patients with head and neck cancers when indicated.
  9. Refer patients with head and neck tumors to other subspecialties as indicated.
  10. Follow-up properly all treated patients with head and neck tumors.
  11. Teach head and neck surgical oncology to medical students and surgical residents.
  12. Accomplish at least one research paper on head and neck surgical oncology.
