Debate

Description

Debate will be used as part of the learning activities of the GSI Division.

For the trainees, debate will be useful in the learning of the following:

1. Analysis of journal articles

2. Handling of controversial issues in surgery

3. Critical thinking

4. Public speaking (communication skills)

5. Interpersonal skills

Mechanics

The trainees will be divided into two teams, one team for the pros and the other team for the cons of the issue for debate.

An issue for debate will be given to the two teams in advance for preparation purposes.

On the day of debate, the following format will be followed:

1. Presentation of situationer and issue for debate

2. Clarification of situationer and issue for debate

3. Consecutive presentation by the two team captains of their stand on the issue for a maximum of 10 minutes each

4. Consecutive rebuttal by the opposing team captains for a maximum of 5 minutes each

5. Consecutive rebuttal by the members of the opposing teams for a maximum of 3 minutes per team

6. Reactions from resource persons

7. Open forum
