A General Description

The Division of Head and Neck, Breast, Esophagus, and Soft Tissue Surgery is one of the eleven divisions in the Department of Surgery of the U.P. College of Medicine and Philippine General Hospital. The Division is traditionally called GSI (pronounced as GS One) in the Department of Surgery.

GSI deals primarily with patients with surgical disorders involving the head and neck, breast, esophagus, and soft tissues. Secondarily, it also deals with patients with acute nontraumatic surgical abdomen and acute hernia when it goes on duty every three days in the Philippine General Hospital.

Goal

To promote excellence in service, training, and research in the field of head and neck, breast, esophagus and soft tissue surgical diseases.

 

General Objectives

  1. To provide expertise in the management of patients with head and neck, breast, esophagus, and soft tissue surgical diseases.
  2. To provide training in the field of head and neck, breast, esophagus, and soft tissue surgical diseases.
  3. To promote research in the field of head and neck, breast, esophagus, and soft tissue surgical diseases.

 

Specific Objectives

  1. To provide expertise in the diagnosis of patients with head and neck, breast, esophagus, and soft tissue surgical diseases.
  2. To provide expertise in the treatment of patients with head and neck, breast, esophagus, and soft tissue surgical diseases.
  3. To teach undergraduate medical students the basic principles in the management of patients with head and neck, breast, esophagus, and soft tissue surgical diseases.
  4. To train general surgical residents and fellows on how to diagnose and treat patients with head and neck, breast, esophagus, and soft tissue surgical diseases.
  5. To promote research in the field of head and neck, breast, esophagus, and soft tissue surgical diseases among surgical residents and fellows.
  6. To promote research in the field of head and neck, breast, esophagus, and soft tissue surgical diseases among consultants of the Division.
